The stations

The complete list of 2,572 stations that I will be visiting as part of this journey can be viewed here and this document has been based on the 2018-19 station usage figures, which are compiled by the ORR (Office of Rail and Road).
Even without referencing the temporary timetables that train operating companies have introduced this year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic (where some stations have had services temporarily suspended for safety or operational reasons), there have been some longer-term changes made in certain areas and these have been detailed below:
-
Bishops Lydeard - In July 2019, Great Western Railway started operating a limited Saturday-only summer train service to serve this heritage station on the West Somerset Railway. However this National Rail service did not operate in 2020 and it remains to be seen whether it will be re-introduced in future years.
-
Corfe Castle - In May 2018, South Western Railway started operating a limited Saturday-only summer train service to serve this heritage station on the Swanage Railway, and similar arrangements continued the following year. However this National Rail service did not operate in 2020 and it remains to be seen whether it will be re-introduced in future years.
-
IBM - In December 2018, this station had its service temporarily suspended due to low passenger numbers and anti-social behaviour on the derelict IBM site, which is next to the station. While the station hasn't officially been closed, no trains currently serve it, although a planning application which could involve the reintroduction of train services was submitted earlier this year.
-
Manchester United Football Ground - In late 2017 / early 2018, this station had its service - which had operated on football matchdays only - suspended indefinitely at the request of the football club due to safety reasons. While the station hasn't officially been closed, no trains currently serve it.
While boarding or alighting a National Rail train service at these four stations is currently impossible, every effort will be made to visit them when - and if - it becomes possible to do so again.
New stations that have opened since the 2018-19 station usage figures were published - and which are therefore included in my list - are: Meridian Water (June 2019), Warrington West (December 2019), Robroyston (December 2019), Worcestershire Parkway (February 2020), Horden (June 2020), and Kintore (October 2020). Any new stations that subsequently open and are served by National Rail services will be added to my list.
The only station that has formally closed since the 2018-19 station usage figures were published - and which therefore is not included in my list - is: Angel Road (May 2019). Aside from the four stations listed above, any stations currently on my list that are subsequently advertised as either closing permanently or having services suspended indefinitely will need to be visited prior to these changes taking place.
